Indisputably one of Africa’s true wonders of nature and an extraordinary place of haunting beauty, with its grand majestic mountain ring and lake, Ngorongoro, an active volcano some 8 million years ago, covers an area of 264sq.km and is the largest intact caldera in the world. Approaching Ngorongoro Crater is a unique experience.

The road winds upwards through a beautiful area of tropical rainforest and meadows carpeted with wild flowers. Its enduring charm stems from its overwhelming physical beauty and the abundance of wildlife permanently resident on the crater floor.

A natural wildlife sanctuary within a volcanic caldera. A unique opportunity to view the Big Five. Rhino are commonly seen in the Crater. Panoramic views from the lodges situated along the rim of the Crater.

Perched on the edge of the crater rim, Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is made up of three villages, each with 10 private cottages, all commanding dazzling views of the crater floor some 500 metres below. The new Lodge, inspired by ancient African architecture, is a fusion of earth and glass integrated into the dramatic rim of the crater.Close to Olduvai Gorge, “the cradle of mankind”, the stunning Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge has been built around the theme of prehistoric life.

Constructed into the crater rim in stone, the walls and terraces are skillfully set to match the existing contours of the site. The Lodge has 75 rooms, all overlooking the Ngorongoro Crater.

The interior, radiating out from the primeval log fire glowing at the heart of the Lodge, blends the concentrated hush of a game-viewing hide with the ochre, rust and charcoal images of a prehistoric cavern. it by flaming wall-lanterns, clad in gigantic volcanic boulders and decorated by the iron spears, bright-beaded robes and intricately carven artefacts of the Maasai, the Lodge is a unique blend of world-class luxury, timeless volcanic splendor and ethnic style.

As for the views, from lilac-streaked sunrise, to indigo star-studded night, the immeasurably ancient Ngorongoro Crater delivers a theatre of vistas, most unchanged since the dawn of time.
