Back to Kenya National Parks Highlights
Samburu National Reserve is not very well-known, but definitely worth a visit. It is situated on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro river in Kenya.
This means plenty of water, trees and shade to attract wildlife like elephant, lion, giraffe and zebra from the surrounding savannah plains.

Leopards are also regularly spotted. The reserve is not particularly well-known and is therefore not too crowded - a huge plus in Kenya where so many reserves are often overflowing with tourists.

It is often grouped together with the Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserves as they lie so close together.Rugged and remote, with the same faunal structure, these wildlife reserves, with a total area of 428sq. km, lie just within the fascinating semi- desert Norhern Frontier District of Kenya.

The tranquil Uaso Nyiro River, flowing through Shaba and Samburu, attract a wide number of rare wildlife and provides a natural habitat for crocodile. Long necked gerenuk, Grevy`s zebra and reticulated giraffe are species not found in the less arid areas to the south.
Elephant seek solace and contentment in the shallow waters of this wide sauntering river, fringed with acacia, doum palms and tamarind, which together with Buffalo Springs support a large variety of African mammals, cheetah and Leopard being particularly well represented. Doves and guinea fowl abound with the giant
Martial Eagle perched on some high vantage point.

THE SAMBURU COMPLEX
Just north of Isiolo, and off the beaten minibus safari track, are three national reserves grouped together, Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba. The reserves stretch along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro river and cover an area of about 300 km². Although it is not far from the Mt Kenya foothills, the geography here is vastly different, with desert scrub and savannah plains.
The tree-lined river is permanent and attracts a lot of game. You are almost guaranteed to see elephant here. The river also attracts buffalo, reticulated giraffe, cheetah, leopard, lion, warthogs and grevy's zebra and you may spot a crocodile sunning on the banks.
There is also stunning birdlife. The Samburu complex is also home to Samburu herdsmen, who can be seen driving their herds through the dust, dressed in striking red blankets and carrying spears. Even though the reserves are continuous, you will have to pay to enter each one if you move from one to the other.
